"memories of a city full of thousands of beautiful outsiders"

Common Cities

Project comissioned by and presented in Jetzt! Festival 2024

Kultur Region Stuttgart

Each inhabitant has its own city. Each city has multiple cities inhabiting within it. Sometimes these cities have elements that communicate; sometimes they are completely different. We want to talk about the common cities that inhabit us, that urban and symbolic cartography full of memories, questions, desires and personal objects that, at the same time, can resonate in other people.

Common cities explores the cultural diversity of some cities in Europe through the stories of foreign and migrant people and their intimate ties to the urban space in which they have decided to live. Through the interplay between the autobiographical and the everyday, this artistic gesture seeks to share new ways of experiencing urban spaces, highlighting how personal experiences contribute to the multicultural identity of the cities we inhabit today.

What cartographies are drawn when you begin to feel a city as your own? What links are there between integration and the architecture of the city? What personal maps do we want to share? What places tell your story? How does our city communicate with the city inhabited by others?

Let's talk about drawing some of those merged and diverse cities.

The exploration of physical and symbolic spaces of every city and the stories of those participating in the project will lead us to connect realities, build bridges, observe the urbanity of the present that we share, and perhaps also allow us to be participants in the urbanity of the future. We focus on concepts such as integration, inclusion, sense of belonging, notion of home and resilience.

Several people guide this journey, leading us to significant places in their testimonies. In each space a collective action will take place (eating together, playing, dancing...). We will work with different geographies, creating both physical and emotional maps and cartographies that reflect ethnic and cultural diversity, showing how the city is shaped by all its inhabitants.

In this way, we explore new ways of inhabiting and expressing the city from a broader perspective. By inserting personal memories into urban spaces, narratives are constructed that work as tools for thought, dialogue and action. Thus, the city is rediscovered through different views, desires and concerns, generating a corpus of alternative ways of understanding the reality that surrounds us and that, in turn, we inhabit.
